Banishing the Ordinary with The Risky Rabbit
A scaremaker, at least by our definition here at 52 Weeks of Horror, extends beyond those circles of filmmakers and actors who create fright on film. To be a scaremaker all have to do it create art within the horror and macabre community. Write a story. Play a song. Work a haunt. Or in the case of some very crafty folks like The Risky Rabbit, create clothes and other things that embrace the elements of pop culture and classic terror that make up the fabric of our fringe community.
“Banish the Ordinary.” That’s the tagline for The Risky Rabbit, an online shop making designer fashion and merchandise for horror fans and cinephiles. The market can seem saturated at times by trendy little shops and crafters offering colorful, flashy prints that designer clothes. These shops come and go with an alarming frequency often because their products are unoriginal, uninspired, and over priced. Lucky for us The Risky Rabbit is definitely here to stay. The prices are good and, more importantly, the products are beyond incredible in both design and quality.
I’ve been following them for a while on Instagram and I love seeing the creative and stunning prints they continue to produce. Bright explosions of neon color surrounding text and imagery from some of the most amazing horror related and adjacent films and books as well as some one of a kind original pieces, The Risky Rabbit has an array of items that will appeal to almost everyone.
I’m partial to the collection “Lit & Quote” that The Risky Rabbit offers, largely because I’m more of a reader than a pop culture and film guy. So imagine my delight when I see some of the best lines and remarks from Mary Shelley and Stephen King on shirts, mugs, and framed prints. There are also some great quotes from Twin Peaks which, while definitely an acquired taste, had some of the best dialogue for any series from the late 80’s/early 90’s.
Jumping up to “Halloween 2018” I’m in love with “Video Killed the Lagoon” featuring a colorized Creature from the Black Lagoon in a pair of classic 3D glasses against a black and white background. There are also pieces of art, clothing, and even some enamel pins inspired by films like Death Proof, Mandy, and American Psycho. Then there are the totally original pieces that have nothing at all to do with any pop horror iconography but are none the less absolutely stunning.
The Risky Rabbit still has some sales running right now on shirts, prints, and coffee mugs and they have an impressive collection of original and inspired work for horror fans and cinema nerds alike.
